Adelante of Suffolk County, Inc., a non-profit multi-service community based organization, founded in 1966, has successfully provided services to the culturally diverse community of Suffolk County in the areas of health, education, employment, supported housing, youth leadership programs, volunteerism, and cultural awareness. Adelante strives to eliminate the social stigma and economic barriers that prevent the effective functioning and assimilation of its community members. This goal is achieved by assisting the most vulnerable: children and youth, persons with disabilities, low-income families, recent immigrants and senior citizens.
Supported Housing:
Since 1992, Adelante has provided housing for persons with disabilities who would otherwise be unable to live independently. Clients are provided with the benefit of 24-hour, seven-day a week, bilingual case management services. This program has helped a number of OMH clients find permanent homes for themselves and their families.
Housing & Tenant Counseling Services:
The most pressing and immediate need is intervention on behalf of tenants to prevent homelessness and to assist those who are homeless. Services include: assistance in finding affordable housing, advocacy and dispute resolution in landlord-tenant matters, and assisting tenants in money management and household budgeting. Adelante also offers referrals to programs such as HEAP, Section 8, Social Services, and Public Housing. Assistance with applications to these programs is provided, particularly for those families with language and cultural barriers. Teaching low-income families household management and coping skills will eventually lead to independence, self-reliance, and possibly home ownership.

The North Fork Housing Alliance, Inc. serves the entire “North Fork” of the eastern end of Long Island, which is comprised of the Towns of Riverhead and Southold. The Alliance has targeted the Village of Greenport which has had the greatest concentration of low income residents and a deteriorated housing stock.
The purpose of the North Fork Housing Alliance, Inc. is to:
- assist low-income residents in acquiring affordable housing by operating programs that will combat gentrification and discrimination;
- continue rehabilitation and construction of low-cost housing;
- secure subsidies which could reduce shelter costs; increase the number of low-cost units for target population; - utilize trainees in the rehabilitation program;
- provide decent, affordable housing specifically designed to meet the needs and requirements of low-income families;
- plan, construct, operate, maintain, and improve rental housing for low-income families;
- apply for, obtain, and contract with federal, state, and local government for loans or grants or other financial aid for the provision of housing for low-income families;
- enter into joint ventures with individuals, groups, corporations, municipalities, and other agencies for the purpose of providing low-income housing.
The Central Islip Civic Council, a community based non-profit, builds, rehabs and manages affordable homes for lower income first time homebuyers and tenants. We provide first time homebuyer, budgeting, and foreclosure intervention counseling services. As a Department of Labor worksite, we help train teenagers and adults. We run an emergency food pantry, hold free recreational and educationa l events for the community, and promote economic development for our distressed hamlet. In addition, the Council advocates for better recreational facilities for our children; and for more and better services for our area.
The Central Islip service area is: North to the LIExpressway and Motor Parkway; south to Atlantic Street and Spur Drive; west to Route 111 and east to the Connetquot River State Park Preserve
Housing Help, Inc. (HHI) is a not-for-profit housing agency that provides services for low and moderate income households in the Town of Huntington, Huntington Station, Greenlawn, and East Northport.
Housing Help's programs include:
Tenant Counseling - assistance finding apartments, provide information and referral for rent assistance, explain the eviction process, and provide referrals to free legal services.
First Time Home Buyer Counseling - one-on-one counseling including: credit report review, credit improvement assistance, debt reduction strategy, financial evaluation for mortgage eligibility and affordability, overview of the home buying process.
Foreclosure Prevention & Mortgage Modification - financial analysis of the income, expenses, debt, and the possible modifications or option that may be available.
Credit Education & Debt Reduction - intensive financial evaluation and review of the credit report, including credit repair strategies.
New Program - Student Loan counseling
New Construction of affordable housing - 76 home buyer units and 70 rental units to be completed in fall 2019.
Suburban Housing Development & Research, Inc. provides multiple services to its neighborhood and its clients. Suburban Housing serves the areas of the Bay Shore School District and the Brentwood School District. The area is bound by Brentwood Rd on the east,Sagtikos Parkway on the west,Crooked Hill Rd on the north and Montauk Highway on the south.
Seventy-two corporate-owned houses are home to formerly homeless families who are at risk of returning to homelessness. Suburban has a skilled rehabilitation/maintenance crew to serve these units and the neighborhood. From a social services perspective Suburban provides traditional social work support from two licensed MSWs, subsidy assistance, relocation assistance, and eviction prevention. Additionally Suburban operates a walk in/delivery food pantry for its tenants and members of the neighborhood. Support for the children includes an education advocate, an after school tutoring program and a summer program.
Wyandanch Community Development Corporation (WCDC) was formed in 1969 by community members concerned with neighborhood revitalization and preservation. WCDC's mission is to conduct and participate in Community Development Programs designed to preserve the community, protect the health and safety of residents, complement housing rehabilitation programs, and promote self-help programs. Ultimately these efforts promote further economic development in the target area and improve quality of life for residents.
WCDC offers comprehensive housing counseling. WCDC works with the local government to acquire dilapidated units for rehabilitation and vacant property for new construction. Once completed, these units are a source of safe, affordable, decent housing for income eligible (Section 8 and HOME Guidelines) families who would be forced to reside in substandard conditions without the program. In addition to creating housing, we work with our tenants through our Tenant's Association. WCDC also builds Affordable Homes for income-eligible buyers.
WCDC's service area encapsulates the 11 hamlets of the Town of Babylon. Included are Wyandanch/Wheatley Heights, Babylon, West Babylon, North Babylon, North Lindenhurst, Lindenhurst, Copiague, North Amityville, Amityville, Deer Park and East Farmingdale.
The Bellport Hagerman East Patchogue Alliance, Inc. was established in 1979 to address housing problems and to improve community conditions and the quality of life for its residents. The Alliance was certified in 1982 to provide comprehensive housing counseling. The counseling includes budgeting, landlord/tenant responsibilities. mortgage, rent default, utility assistance, and reverse mortgage counseling for the elderly. Since 1984, the Alliance has acquired 65 single family units of housing and built 3 new units for the homeless or low to moderate income households. Home Ownership Management Education Seminars - the H.O.M.E.S. Program educates prospective home buyers about the various mortgage products available to qualified first time borrowers and teaches them the responsibility of home ownership.
Housing Rehabilitation Program - The Alliance has acquired 69 homes in the Bellprot, East Patchogue Area and sold 23 to very affordable prices to tenants living in the unit. Tenants living in these homes can count on good quality housing reasonable rents and responsible management.
Housing Counseling - Counselors have used their skills to help families avoid evictions and ward off homelessness by helping to improve budgeting skills. They also provide information on how to negotiate mortgages and how to improve budgeting skills. Under this program, families are often reffered to other funding programs for long term assistance with goverment subsidy programs.
Utilities Assistance - The Alliance provides utility assistance to families in crisis during the winter months if they qualify. This is an emergency fund to prevent utility shut off (Project Warmth) when funds are available.
Anger Management Program -The Alliance provides a 10 week Anger Management Program.
BHEP Senior Group - The purpose of the senior group is to provide fellowship among the retirees in the North Bellport Community. They meet every Thursday between 12pm -4pm for a pot luck lunch and other activities.
Bellport Second Chance Progam - It is a program to help people who have been incarcerated and now returning to the community. The coordinator provides case management to identify the ex-offenders basic needs, and assist them with job readiness, referrals for GED and training programs.
