The St. Lawrence County Housing Council, Inc. (SLCHC) serves St. Lawrence County, New York, a rural county the size of the state of Delaware with a population of approximately 111,000 that has one of the lowest median incomes in New York State. Incorporated in 1981, SLCHC, as part of the Rural Preservation Program, has brought grants in excess of $51 million to bear on housing and revitalization needs. In August of 1999, SLCHC became a chartered member of the NeighborWorks Network.
It is SLCHC's vision to assure every resident of the county access to decent and affordable housing in vital and vibrant communities. To that end, SLCHC has four main lines of business: housing preservation, homeownership promotion, property management, and community facilities. Each year, SLCHC typically helps rehabilitate dozens of homes, assists approximately fifty homebuyers in purchasing their first homes, and provides many others with classes and counseling about the home buying process, home maintenance, and financial literacy. SLCHC manages two hundred apartments that mostly serve seniors or persons with disabilities, and works with municipalities and other not-for-profit organizations on a variety of community development projects.
