Bishop Sheen Ecumenical Housing Foundation, Inc. (Sheen Housing) is a not-for -profit corporation that provides safe, decent, affordable housing for very low-to moderate-income families, seniors and persons with disabilities in order to promote their self worth and dignity. Sheen Housing was founded in 1968 to help low-income families purchase their first homes by providing loans and grants for closing costs. Over the past years, programs and staff have been added to address a wider range of urban and rural housing needs. Today Sheen Housing supports not only families, but also organizations that provide housing for low-income families.
Bishop Sheen provides home repair services to decrease substandard housing conditions that threaten the health and safety of residents as well as accessibility modifications to allow frail elderly and those with disabilities to remain independent in their own home. They offer home ownership opportunities, housing education and housing counseling for first-time home buyers as well as current homeowners experiencing a housing need. They also provide affordable rental opportunities for families, seniors, veterans and persons with disabilities.
Bishop Sheen serves the Counties of Allegany, Cayuga, Chemung, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, Wayne and Yates.
As a Rural Preservation Company for over 46 years, located in the heart of Corning, CPI has the expertise in providing home repair assistance to homeowners throughout the tri-county area. Community Progress, Inc. (CPI) provides housing and economic development services throughout the rural hills and valleys of Chemung, Steuben and Schuyler Counties that are situated in the Southern Tier Region of upstate New York. covering a total of 2,150 square miles, 14 towns and 14 villages in the service area.
CPI regularly applies for funding to the following agencies; New York State Affordable Housing Corporation, the Housing Trust Fund and New York State Homes and Community Renewal, as well as local private foundations. In addition, they work closely with other local agencies throughout the region to leverage funds that will further assist in addressing all major health and safety hazards in the homes that are served in order to ensure that local code violations and necessary home repairs are met.
Many of the repairs and/or replacements that CPI provides include, but are not limited to; roof, window, exterior door, furnace/boiler, hot water tank and gutter replacements, electrical and plumbing updates, insulation and weatherization installations, foundation and chimney repairs, as well as provisions for handicap accessibility in and to the home.
Additionally, CPI provides support for economic preservation and revitalization within our rural service area. They work closely with local municipalities to provide financial assistance for the renovation of commercial mixed-use structures, as well as assist communities with the development of public infrastructure which supports housing and community development.
