The Mohawk Indian Housing Corporation (MIHC) owns and operates rental management for 76 units of safe, decent, affordable, subsidized housing targeted for the elderly, handicapped/disabled, low, very low income families, the homeless and families in emergency crisis or facing a housing disaster. Over $3,275,226 in loans and grants were secured to construct three Housing Complexes totaling 78 units of affordable housing with water and sewer system in Rooseveltown. There was a loss of 6 subsidized units from a fire in 1999 leaving 72 units. A $119,963 Grant/Loan was secured in 2015 to replace a two unit emergency Housing Complex with four Emergency/Transitional Housing units in Akwesasne.

Sustainability and upgrade activities include: maintenance, preservation, repairs, rehabilitation, or other improvement of occupied housing to improve the living conditions of our target consumer group. Programs have been developed as core services through partnerships with other organizations to better meet the needs of clients served. Staff provide information and referral to the residents and other members of the community, workshops, training, Lifeline & Safe Link application assistance, preliminary conflict resolution, referral and follow-up to employment, financial, health and educational programs/services, home energy savings, eviction prevention, financial literacy and rental assistance.

Other program include the Emergency Food & Shelter Program, which offers emergency rent and electric assistance payment. The VITA Program, which operates four mornings per week for free tax return preparation. The Transportation Program provides free reliable bus transportation three days per week, year round taking residents shopping, banking, medical drop off or pick up, and scenic excursions. A monthly Activity Program with planned activities to promote socialization and community involvement with congregate meals for holiday, special events, weekly bingo, arts & crafts, cards or movies.

Franklin County Community Housing Council, Inc provides a myriad of housing programs and services. The largest program is the Section 8 Voucher program. FCCHC provides 383 voucher holders with rental subsidy throughout Franklin County, as well as project based subsidy to two are projects for a total of 140 units.

FCCHC manages 3 Rural Development 515 projects named Burchacon and 1 Housing Trust Fund project also called Burchacon Housing. The Burchacon HTF project is scheduled to under go a 2.8 million dollar rehabilitation beginning in June of 2016.

FCCHC manages 7 scatter site homeless projects located in both Franklin and Essex County. All of theses projects are governed by OTDA,DHCR,and are tax credit properties. There are a total of 42 supportive homeless units.

FCCHC manages 3 scatter site affordable housing projects located in both Franklin and Essex county. These affordable projects are tax credit properties as well. There are a total of 43 affordable units.

FCCHC implements HUD's Continuum of Care program providing leasing funds coupled with Case management for homeless individuals and families placed with private sector landlords throughout Franklin County.

FCCHC offers foreclosure prevention, and a home buyer program. FCCHC implements the Section 8 Home Buyer program on a year round basis, and will be implementing a HOME funded First Time Home buyer program in June of 2016. We will assist 10 income eligible first time home buyers with down payment/closing cost assistance, as well as rehabilitation funds.

FCCHC is the fiscal conduit for Emergency Food and Shelter Funds and Salvation Army funds.

What is a weatherization assistance provider?

Weatherization assistance providers can assist eligible homeowners and owners of rental properties with measures to improve energy efficiency, including:

  • an energy audit of the home to identify specific needs;
  • addition of insulation to walls or ceilings;
  • weather-stripping and caulking around doors and windows;
  • cleaning, testing, repairs, or replacement of heating systems;
  • replacement or repair of broken windows and/or outside doors;
  • mitigation of health and safety concerns; in particular assuring that all dwelling units receive smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

Weatherization Services may also include other energy-related improvements such as: water heater repair/replacement, lighting fixture replacement, venting systems, refrigerator replacement, and certain electrical service work.

Weatherization services are available to income-eligible (60% of State median income) individuals who may be either homeowners or renters living in a single-family home, a manufactured/mobile home, or an apartment.
